Spring Time Tactics!

Mach 11, 2021

Good afternoon fishy friends! The temps are rising, the fish are hungry, and it can be a great time to stretch your legs and relieve some of that covid cabin fever. Here’s some different ways to find success while taking your fly rod for a walk.

This time of year the water can be different everyday. With rising temps and melting snow or rain, its always a good idea to check the flows before you go. The only job that fish have is to eat. Rising water isn’t always a bad thing, however if its too brown or too dangerous to wade then I suggest the original Star Wars movies as an alternative.

You can never carry too many flies with you this time of year. I’ll usually carry my midge, baetis, stonefly, and “dirty flies” boxes. Depending on where you are fishing, the spring can mean its baetis and skwala time. Its always nice after a long winter of midges to be able to tie on some baetis and bigger stonefly’s. The “dirty flies” box is all of my san juan worms, squirmy worms, and mop flies. This box is inevitable this time of year when the water starts to rise.

When looking for fish, you have to keep an open mind. Continue to look for your slower deeper water but a lot of your usual spots may look different or just not be a viable option. Fish will move around a lot to find the spots where they can burn the least energy and find the most food. My best suggestion is to try anything that you think can hold a fish. Unfortunately, there isn’t a black or white answer of where they will be.

Next week i’ll talk about some different rigs that I run, how I alter my flies, and the knots I use to hold it all together!
